The Inter-fraternity Council at UVA released a statement Tuesday afternoon implementing a “three week suspension of all new member activities and social events until March 20th.” This suspension will cover the already suspended Kappa Sigma, as well as the remainder of the fraternities on Grounds. The decision from the IFC comes just one week after a student pledging Kappa Sigma was hospitalized from a serious fall.
Investigations into hazing allegations are being conducted by both the University and law enforcement. The events at Kappa Sigma are “the subject of an active criminal investigation,” says Tim Longo, Chief of UVA Police. University Spokesperson, Bethanie Glover, further confirmed that the fraternity “has been suspended pending a university investigation.”
On Monday, the University Medical Center revealed the student is currently a patient of its Intensive Care Unit. His condition remains unknown.
“We take allegations of hazing seriously,” Glover said on the matter, planning to quickly “investigate [Kappa Sigma] and take disciplinary action if necessary.”
The Inter-fraternity Council has expressed its concern for the students wellbeing and its firm stand against hazing. “The health and safety of our members and broader community is our foremost goal,” the Organization expressed in its release. In addition to their fraternity-wide pause, “all IFC chapters must initiate their new members between March 21st and 24th.”
While the national Kappa Sigma headquarters as well as its local chapter declined to comment, they are certainly being closely observed as this situation continues to unfold.

So sad. A moment can change everything

Although older than students surely these fraternities and sororities could do volunteer work for the community. For a young person and family so much grief can occur from endless drinking.
