On Monday, June 2nd, Baseball Coach Brian O’Connor announced his decision to accept the head coaching job at Mississippi State University. The 2024–25 athletic season, overall, was quite a bumpy one for the University of Virginia. After years of consistency and high expectations, both of UVA’s most cherished sports programs—basketball and baseball—were hit with big leadership shakeups. It has been jarring for fans, who have long associated these teams with strong, stable direction.Men’s basketball, especially, took a hit. The program found itself faring poorly after longtime head coach Tony Bennett unexpectedly stepped down. Under interim coach Ron Sanchez, the team finished 15–17 and missed the postseason—a result which, for a community used to March Madness runs, was tough to swallow.
Baseball did not end up bringing much comfort either. The Cavaliers ended with a solid 32–18 record, which still was not enough to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Considering UVA baseball had become a postseason fixture over the years, this disappointment was likely the final sting for UVA sports fans. This season marked only the third time in O’Connor’s 22 seasons that the team did not qualify.
It is quite hard to overstate exactly what Coach O’Connor meant to the program. He did not simply win games—917 of them, to be exact—he had helped build something truly special. Under his leadership, the team made seven College World Series appearances and claimed the program’s first national title in 2015. In 2024, he was inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame.
O’Connor’s departure marks the end of an era, just as Bennett’s did. Yet, it serves as a moment to appreciate what he has given this school throughout his career: two decades of excellence, integrity, and mentorship. His legacy lives on as more than his wins but also the culture he created and the players he mentored. He leaves behind a mark on UVA and the Charlottesville community that certainly will not be forgotten anytime soon.
Now, as the program looks to the future, many in the UVA community wonder who will take his place and the implications for the program. Pitching coach Drew Dickinson has recently emerged as a top contender for the head coaching job. He has been with the program for over six seasons and has quietly built one of the strongest pitching staffs in the country. Half of those years he had the best bullpen ERA in the ACC at 4.02.
Dickinson is respected by players and peers alike for his energy, his trust-building, and his deep knowledge of the game. More than that, he understands the program, and if he is given the reins, there is good reason to believe he will carry O’Connor’s legacy forward while also making his own mark. This past year has not been easy for UVA athletics, but seasons of change also bring opportunity—and the Cavaliers may be on the edge of another great chapter.
