The University of Virginia is moving forward with plans to construct a $72 million data center at Fontaine Research Park, marking a significant expansion of its computing infrastructure at a time when universities across the country are investing heavily in such facilities.
But what exactly is a data center, and why does it matter to students and faculty?
In simple terms, a data center is a highly specialized building designed to house critical computer systems and data storage. These centers often serve as the brain behind much of a university’s operations, powering research, managing student records, and supporting day-to-day digital functions. Inside, one can find racks of servers, routers, switches, firewalls, and other complex hardware. These systems require significant infrastructure to keep them running smoothly, including constant cooling systems, backup power generators, and advanced security measures to guard against cyber threats.
For universities like UVA, the appeal of a dedicated data center is clear. As institutions continue to digitize research, academic programs, and administrative functions, the need for reliable and scalable computing power has never been greater. According to Josh Baller, UVA’s Associate Vice President for Research Computing, the current facility on Old Ivy Road is capped at 1.5 megawatts of power, a figure dwarfed by the demands of modern research computing. The new Fontaine facility, by comparison, would begin at a capacity of 4 megawatts, with the potential to scale up to 16 megawatts over time.
“When a researcher has a question that they want to figure out the answer to, more and more they need to get on a computer to answer that question,” Baller explained. “And if they have to wait a couple days to actually ask the question, that slows everything down.”
The benefits extend beyond research. Having a university-operated data center enhances data security by keeping sensitive information—such as student records and financial details—on internal servers instead of relying solely on third-party cloud providers. It also allows UVA to scale its computing resources to meet peak demands, like during enrollment periods or final exams, while scaling back during quieter times to reduce costs.
Additionally, data centers are critical for supporting high-performance computing, which is essential for scientific simulations, big data analytics, and other cutting-edge research initiatives. For a research-intensive institution like UVA, the ability to conduct these processes on-site fosters innovation and helps maintain its competitiveness on a national and global stage.
Yet, not everyone within the University community is fully on board. Data centers have come under scrutiny from environmental groups and policymakers, largely because of their massive energy consumption. Even as UVA’s new facility promises to use a closed-loop cooling system to limit water use, the projected increase in power usage has raised eyebrows. Baller acknowledged these concerns, emphasizing that the university is working to size the facility according to actual demand and to implement energy-efficient practices.
The proposal still faces questions, including the source of the $72 million in funding, though Baller hinted at a mix of revenue opportunities. Construction is tentatively slated to begin in early 2029, pending approval by the Board of Visitors’ Finance Committee this summer.
UVA is not alone in this push. Data centers are proliferating on campuses nationwide, driven by a growing reliance on cloud infrastructure and the relentless expansion of digital education and research needs. Institutions such as the University of Illinois Chicago have similarly invested in their own data centers, citing the need to consolidate smaller facilities, improve disaster recovery capabilities, and comply with federal data security regulations.
As UVA takes this step, the new data center promises to be more than just another building at Fontaine Research Park. It represents a critical investment in the university’s future, one that will quietly but powerfully shape research, learning, and campus life for years to come. Still, as the project moves forward, the challenge will be balancing innovation and efficiency with environmental responsibility—a balancing act that universities everywhere must learn to navigate.
