Up, Up, and UVA: The Balloon Tradition That Lifts Spirits

UVA is rich in traditions that shape the student experience, from streaking the Lawn and hiking Humpback Rock to calling students “first years” and referring to campus as “Grounds.” However, one of the most meaningful traditions comes in anticipation of Final Exercises, when students pick out a balloon that represents who they are, a symbolic gesture that captures their individual journey at UVA.

Every year at graduation, the Lawn is filled with all kinds of balloons that vary from animals to food to other sentimental characters. Families watch proudly as their graduates prepare to cross the Rotunda in their caps and gowns, each holding a unique balloon so they can be spotted easily from far away. This tradition creates an exciting atmosphere, giving students a special way to celebrate everything they’ve achieved at the University.

Six years ago, UVA started a new tradition called the Balloon Brigade, which gives students a chance to give back to the community. After graduation, students donate their balloons to the local children’s hospital. This brings happiness and cheer to the patients while including them in the graduation celebrations.

This year, we asked graduating students what balloons they chose to carry and what this UVA tradition means to them. For many, it’s a meaningful way to bring something personal to graduation day, highlighting their individuality amid a ceremony shared by thousands. One fourth year plans to carry a strawberry balloon, saying, “I love strawberries, and they make me really happy!” Another will bring both a birdhouse and a burger balloon—“Birdhouse because I live in Birdhaus, my sorority satellite with the best girls ever, and a burger because I love burgers,” she shared. One student chose a pig balloon in honor of their favorite childhood animal, while another will carry an Atlanta Braves baseball balloon because “The Atlanta Braves are my home team, and my favorite players are on it.”

One interviewee said, “I love this tradition. I’m super excited to see everyone’s balloons!” Another remarked, “This tradition adds a unique touch to the UVA graduation experience. Not only will it create such a fun environment when we’re walking the Lawn, but knowing the balloons are going to the hospital afterwards feels like a wonderful way to give back.” Finally, a fourth year added, “It’s just a fun, silly tradition that will bring a smile to everyone’s face and [it’s] fun to share the backstories of why you chose your balloon.”

From silly to sentimental, each balloon will tell a story, making this lighthearted tradition a deeply personal part of the graduation experience. The Balloon Brigade reveals how much UVA cares about both its students and the local community. It’s a fun and creative way for students to show who they are while also reminding everyone of the importance of kindness and giving back. From the first day on Grounds to the last walk across the Lawn, these moments help students feel like they’re part of something special.
