On December 14th at 3:40 PM, the Los Angeles police department arrived on the scene of movie director Rob Reiner’s home, where they discovered that he and his wife, Michelle Reiner, had been murdered in their home. Police were dispatched after Reiner’s daughter found them dead.

Their son, Nick Reiner, was arrested soon after. He is currently being held without bail. Reportedly, before the homicide, Nick attended a holiday party at Conan O’Brien’s with his parents in Los Angeles, and they had an argument at the end of the party on Saturday. Reportedly, the Obamas were supposed to visit the Reiners the following day. Nick Reiner has been open about his struggles with addiction in the past and conflicts with his parents surrounding it.

Since their death, many Hollywood stars have expressed their sadness about this devastating loss, such as Paul McCartney, Steven King, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. His career was marked by a myriad of accomplishments. He had his breakout role in “All in the Family,” where he played Michael Stivic and earned two Emmy awards for his achievements. After the show, he began to move on to directing, where he was first successful in the rock and roll movie “Spinal Tap.” Following that, he directed movies such as “Stand by Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “A Few Good Men,” and “When Harry Met Sally.” He also continued to act in the meantime, in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “New Girl,” and “Hannah Montana.”

Rob Reiner was also incredibly politically active, taking up numerous causes throughout

his life. He co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which began the legal battle against California’s same-sex marriage ban. He was involved in passing First 5 California, a program that invests in early childhood development programs using taxes on tobacco. He was a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party and frequently spoke out against President Trump. Many Democratic politicians have expressed their sorrow over his death, such as Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama.

On his Truth Social account, President Trump posted the following:

“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease Known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.

He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald

  1. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before.

May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

Many Republicans have spoken out against this post. Thomas Massie posted on X:

“Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered. I guess my elected GOP colleagues, the VP, and White House staff will just ignore it because they’re afraid? I challenge anyone to defend it.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene posted similar sentiments, writing that:

“Rob Reiner and his wife were tragically killed at the hands of their own son, who reportedly had drug addiction and other issues, and their remaining children are left in serious mourning and heartbreak.

This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.

Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”

The details of this case are still pending, and as of December 16th, the case is being turned over to the Los Angeles Prosecutor’s Office.
