Now that September is officially in the books, it is time to take a look back at UVA’s Wahoo performance this week in athletic play.
Men’s Soccer:
The Cavaliers continued to struggle this week as they lost back-to-back games against #2 ranked Stanford and UNGC. The men did keep the contest with Stanford close on the scoreboard, with a 1-0 final, but the stats were less impressive. Virginia registered a total of nine shots, none of which were on target, making the job effortless for Stanford keeper Rowan Schnebly. Albin Gashi also suffered a red card after denying a goal in the 74th minute. Virginia’s clash with UNGC was also a one-goal contest with a final of 2-1. Midfielder Daniel Mangarov had the lone Wahoo goal. Yoshiya Okawa and Daniel Longo had the two tallies for UNGC. The men have now fallen to a record of 2-4-3 and will next face rival Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash on Friday.
Women’s Soccer:
The soccer struggles continue in Charlottesville on the female side as well. The women suffered a 3-2 lost to rival and #4 ranked UNC. Virginia was able to put two past Tar Heel keeper Clare Gagne with their only two on-target shots. The Virginia scorers were Yuna McCormack and Maggie Cagle. The Heels attempted to pepper Cavalier keeper Victoria Safradin with fifteen shots, only six of which found the target frame, three continuing on to find the net and the other three saved. The loss has now dropped Virginia to a ranking of #25 and the immediate road ahead for the women only gets harder as they have to face #2 ranked Duke on the road tonight.
Cross Country:
The men’s and women’s cross country teams both competed at the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin on Friday. Both teams placed 11th for men out of 24 teams and the women out of 25 teams. The men ran an 8 kilometer race, while the women ran a 6 kilometer race. The top finish man for the Cavaliers was third-year Will Anthony running a 23:45.6, which was good enough for 15th overall. The top finishing Cavalier woman was third-year Jenny Schilling who ran a 20:33.4, coming in 20th place. Cross country’s next meet is back in Charlottesville on Saturday, October 19th. The Panorama Farms Invitational will give Virginia a shot at top finishing with home course advantage.
Field Hockey:
Wahoo Field Hockey remains red-hot as they retain their perfect record through nine games and #3 national ranking. This week the team took down #9 rival Duke Blue Devils 1-0 and fellow Virginia college William and Mary 4-1. The lone score and hero against Duke was Mia Abello, who scored at the 50:17 mark of the game to lift the Cavaliers to victory. Against W&M, the Cavaliers put up 4 straight goals through the first 28 minutes of the game. Mia Abello found the score sheet again along with Taryn Tkachuk, Amelie Rees, and Lilly Hengerer. The team as a whole produced a whopping 29 shots to William and Mary’s 2. This Friday, the women’s team looks to continue their winning ways as they face #11 Boston College on the road.
Volleyball:
Virginia Volleyball had an up and down week as they took on the state of North Carolina. They registered a 3 sets to 2 win of Wake Forest, then had their eight-game winning streak broken by NC State. Virginia’s win over Wake was very back-and-forth with 14 lead changes through the 5 sets of play and 73 total points scored by the Deacons to 72 by the Wahoos. In the end, Virginia’s slightly improved attack consistency and minimal errors edged them out for the win. The women were out-killed in every set and out-served throughout the match against NC State. Regardless, Virginia volleyball appears to be in great shape, boasting a record of 11-2 and an ACC record of 1-1. Volleyball will play at home next Friday against #16 ranked Florida State Seminoles.
Swimming:
This past week, the Cavaliers got back in the pool for the first time this school year, taking on the Navy Midshipmen in an intersquad meet. While this was merely pre-season swimming with no official results, Virginia showed out, putting up good times and strong performances. The hype continues to swell as Charlottesville wait to see their women’s swimming team back in real competition within the coming weeks.
Football:
The Cavaliers will take to the field for a noon kickoff against the Boston College Eagles on Saturday. Entering play, both teams are boasting just one loss on the season at 3-1 for the Cavaliers and 4-1 for the Eagles. BC is coming off a tight win against Michigan State. Virginia should be well rested following their bye week, setting up for what should be a riveting game this Saturday in Charlottesville.
