While midterms have begun to weigh on the students of Charlottesville, Wahoo sports are providing something to cheer for. It’s time to take a look back at this week of Cavalier sports.
Football:
Coach Tony Elliot continues his strong start to the season, with a fantastic come-from-behind victory over a tough Boston College team. Virginia went down early to the Eagles, but found their footing late in the 3rd quarter and battled back to a 24-14 victory, improving their record to 4-1 (2-0 in the ACC). The Cavalier defense was the star of the show on Saturday, only conceding 14 points, all in the first half, while Jonas Sanker had a fumble recovery touchdown. Kicker Will Bettridge was star-studded as well, kicking 3 field goals from 35, 33, and 27 and 2 extra points. Kobe Pace also put the work in, rushing for 83 yards on 19 carries, and Anthony Colandrea connected with Malachi Fields for a 30 yard touchdown. As the Cavaliers turn the corner toward the second half of their season, the road is formidable. Virginia will host Louisville this Saturday in Charlottesville before heading on the road to take on Clemson next weekend.
Field Hockey:
Virginia’s women’s field hockey team continues to battle through their schedule and their #3 national ranking. The women suffered their first loss of the season to #11 Boston College in a nail-biter 3-2 overtime decision on Friday. Midfielder Daniela Mendez-Trendler had both goals for the Cavaliers. The women came back with vengeance against #16 Louisville with a gritty 1-0 win. The lone tally came from Taryn Tkachuk at the 41:00 mark of the 4th quarter. Goalkeeper Tyler Kennedy also managed a save, which helped shut out the Cardinals and move the Wahoos to 10-1. Field hockey will play #8 St. Joseph’s on Sunday in Charlottesville.
Volleyball:
The Cavalier volleyball team stays red-hot as they improve their record to 13-2, their best start to a season since 2003. After having their eight-game win streak snapped by NC State, the volleyball team shredded #16 Florida State in straight sets. They recorded 43 kills and served a clean 90.4% match to take down the Seminoles. Brooklyn Borum and Milan Gomillion led the way defensively, combining for 27 digs and clean 98.1% reception. Virginia then faced Miami in John Paul Jones arena on Sunday, pushing them aside in 3 sets as well. The Cavaliers outscored Miami 54-41 and out-blocked them 7-3. Elayna Duprey had a standout game with 12 kills and 13 points. Volleyball will go on the road to play Clemson this Friday.
Men’s Soccer:
It was a great week for the men as they took down #19 rival Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash and #10 JMU to improve to 4-4-3. The Cavaliers beat the Hokies by a final of 2-1. Midfielders Daniel Mangarov and Albin Gashi were the heroes to net the 2 goals. Virginia keeper Joey Batrouni kept the game close with an impressive 11 saves to sink the team from Blacksburg. The contest with James Madison University was another one-goal affair, this time a shut-out. JMU handed UVA a win after scoring an own goal in the 90th minute. The men will look to follow up this great week as they move their sights to the Boston College Eagles in tomorrow’s match up.
Women’s Soccer:
The women suffered a difficult week as they played #4 UNC and #2 Duke in Chapel Hill and Durham. The Wahoos lost to UNC 3-2. Maggie Cagle and Yuna McCormack had the 2 goals for UVA, while Victoria Safradin had 3 saves. Duke beat out UVA by a score of 3-1. Meredith McDermott was the lone scorer for Virginia. Despite 2 straight losses, the Cavaliers remain ranked at #25 and returned to their victorious ways after facing NC State last night for their Senior Night game in front of a home crowd, winning 3-0.
Swimming and Diving:
Virginia will host the Florida Gators this Saturday in the pool. This will mark the official beginning to the Cavalier swimming and diving schedule. Coverage will be on the ACC Network and begins at 10 am with diving.
